MorphoSEZ
Cash prizes worth 15000 INR to be won!
In the words of the noted American economist Ted Levit -
"Just as energy is the basis of life itself, and ideas the source of innovation, so is innovation the vital spark of all human change, improvement and progress".
MorphoSEZ wants to provide you a platform to do just that, imagine and engineer. You have to design and build a scale model of a self sufficient Special Economic Zone complete with civic amenities and provision for efficient service systems. Let your thoughts flow, let the genius in you be known, let the undying human prowess to create, cast a halo all around. This event requires basics of town planning, landscaping, etc. If you have it in you to plan a township, or Special Economic Zone, for that matter, even the basics of town planning is enough, so the opportunity is knocking at your doorstep.
The presentation time for the participants is 15 mins and Q&A session would be of 5 mins.
Registrations are now closed.
Phase I online prelims can be accessed here. Remember, you need to register first to take this quiz. The prelims would be open from 0000 hrs on 15 February 2010, till 1200 hrs on 22 February, 2010.
Problem Statement
Build a model to implement the idea of the SEZ and try to make the plan as self sufficient on energy as possible.
Land under consideration:
- Area: 3200 acres (3000 in the mainland and 200 in the island).
- Peninsular Landscape.
- Lies in the Earthquake Zone 4.
- Island has a hilly terrain.
- Wind velocity is favorable.
- Perennial River flows through as shown in the diagram.
- The island and the ocean beyond it lie in the petroleum exploration zone.
- The land under consideration is well connected by all modes of transport.
Soil and Rock strata:
The soil strata of the region close to river is having a impervious layer of rocks having sedimentary nature, 20m below the layer of clayey soil. Also the soil of the region is of very disturbing nature. The soil tends to deform easily in the region around the river (roughly 200m on both sides throughout the length of the river). The overall area is covered with layer of red soil on top and has average depth of 4 meters. The rock strata near the river also have a case of multiple faulting (which are active) and the alignment of faults is in vertical direction.

Abstract
The abstract should include the plans for as to how you are going to build up the SEZ and also various reasons as to why are you suggesting these strategies. For example:
- Why the port or docks are situated in that particular area?
- Why the residential area is located there?
- How a particular kind of industry would be beneficial?
- Why have the power stations been situated in this manner?
- How is this kind of drainage pattern going to help in transportation?
- Why have the rail tracks been laid in this place?
- Suppose you use some new technology (energy efficient in terms of carbon emission) then how is it going to help?
- Where should the free trade zone be located?
- How have the geographical advantages been put to use?
- Why can't these industries not be located here?
- How can the airway traffic and the bulk carriers be put to maximum usage?
- How can the island be put to good use?
- How to take care of fractures, faults and their importance in petroleum exploration? Any idea regarding exploration and production would be awarded extra points.
- It should also include a detailed discussion about the mechanical and electrical systems that pertain to the self sufficiency and what innovation you plan to implement.
Prelims
Upload the abstract (ppt/doc/pdf) explaining about plans for the SEZ in detail in the registration form for the event. Deadline for uploading your abstracts will be decided soon.
Abstract should include:
- Description of constructions to be done.
- How you wish to transmute the given landscape into a special economic zone.
- Description of any latest existing technology you would like to implement.
Font size to be used in the abstract: 12pt.
The abstract should not exceed 8 A4 pages.
Apart from this, there would be an online quiz round which will be held from February 15-20, 2010. People who have registered have to take the online quiz also.
Finals
Short listed teams must build the physical model as mentioned in their abstract (and later during the presentation on the final day). The model has to be submitted on the day of event followed by the presentation and Q&A round as per the allotted slot.
- Each team can have maximum of 3 members.
- Shortlisted teams should build the physical model as mentioned in their abstract.
- The data constraints provided in the problem should be strictly followed.
- The time allotted for the power point presentation will be 12 mins and question answer session will be for 3 mins.
- Ideas should be original and should not be in any resemblance with the existing project.
Judging Criteria
- Innovation and Cost Efficiency of the SEZ.
- Pertinence of the Project.
- Usage of available resources.
