Modern biology and biotechnology is one of India’s most promising enterprises and its growth and stature will always be indebted to one man. Meet Dr P M Bhargava, architect of molecular biology and biotechnology in India. PM Bhargava is currently the chairman of MARCH (The Medically Aware and Responsible Citizens of Hyderabad). A recipient of the Padma Bhushan and the France’s highest civilian honour, Legion d’Honneur, the National Citizens' Award, founder director of one of the world’s best laboratories in modern biotechnology, the Centre of Cellular and Molecular Biology, Hyderabad, currently a centre of excellence recognized by UNESCO.

Born a prodigy, he was educated at Varanasi and Lucknow. He obtained his PhD at the young age of 21. Currently, he is one of India’s most acclaimed scientists, a man whose sole aim was to put India on the forefront of cellular and molecular biology. He is cited as a major researcher in genetic engineering.

His prophetic coinage of the term ‘Genetic Engineering’ leaves very less to imagination regarding his contributions to this field.

A well-known critic of Indian governmental policies, his incisive analysis catapulted him to the post of Vice-Chairman in the National Knowledge Commission. He has also served as a member in the National Security Advisory Board. Given the number of awards he has won, it would not be inappropriate to say that the awards have been enriched by being bestowed upon him.

For years P M Bhargava has nurtured and supervised India’s biological revolution from close quarters. But that has not stopped him from contributing as a writer. He is the author of the highly acclaimed book, The Saga of Indian Science since Independence: In a Nutshell and a national Integrated Science Textbook for 11-12 year olds. With over 125 major scientific publications, and 400 other articles in some of the best-known publications around the world, he has become a internationally recognized face in science.

M.S. Swaminathan hailed him as a man who has added “life to years” rather than “years to life”.

But then what more can you expect of a gentleman who has Nobel Laureates for buddies. Be there at Pragyan '10 to witness the legend himself!!
