Imagine someone sitting forlorn in his room, utterly dismayed after being rejected in his fifth consecutive job interview; his mind in tatters, his confidence shattered. His very dear friend, his computer, sitting right alongside him, can’t endure the thought of seeing him so frail and powerless. In that very moment of obscurity, it improvises and plays for him ‘don’t stop believing’! Within moments, his gloom fades away, a smile mushrooms all over his face and he gets filled with vigour and fortitude, raring to go, once again!
Seems like a distant and dubious fantasy, doesn’t it? But here is one inhabitant of this very planet who just made it possible!! Gert Lankcriet, one of the young connoisseurs in the field of artificial intelligence, has developed a computer auditioning software that categorizes songs based on the moods and emotions associated with them. The application takes into account the genre and tempo of the song, and infers how a human would characterize it. He's also explored the use of sensors in smart phones to detect our physical characteristics at a particular instance, and cue up exactly the sort of music we are in the mood for. His innovation and dynamism has fetched him appreciations from all over the world; being adjudged a winner of MIT’s prestigious TR-35.
Gert is one of the few propitious young researchers in the field of artificial intelligence. Apart from computer auditioning, his research interests are on the interplay between machine learning, applied statistics and convex optimization techniques.
To do something significant in our lives is what we aim at. To do something that becomes a landmark in the history of human evolution is what we dream of. Gert Lanckriet aimed at the former, and subsequently achieved the latter. Meet a rising mastermind who at such a young age has created the perfect blend of innovation and intelligence; and witness him as he sweeps you off your feet with his enrapturing ideasand conceptions. This year at Pragyan, we present before you, Gert Lankcriet.
