EVENT IS COMPLETED

  • This event consists of two rounds - the first one being an online abstract round which is eliminative in nature and the final one being a simulation round.

  • Participants need to design an aeroplane model and analyse their design using the specified software.

  • The abstract should be related to aero-modelling and aerodynamic analysis, which will be judged in order to select participants for the final round.

      Problem Statement:

  • Design a NACA 0009 foil for the elevator and fin. Re panel the foil to make it more analyzable by X foil with any value between 100-150 panels. Define an Analysis and choose the wise and optimum TYPES among the mentioned four types and describe what those types infer? And explain the reason behind choosing that analysis. Consider Re value as 100000, and remaining parameters are unchanged. Analyze and observe the Cp vs. X graph, also tell briefly what Cp is? For both positive and negative angles of attacks, analyze the foil.

             For example, for positive AoA like 0 to 12o for negative AoA like 0 to -8o

  • Do you know why we are starting with 0o for both positive and negative AoA’s?
  • Import another airfoil AG25 or NACA 1410, choose the optimum airfoil from them for performing batch analysis with NACA 0009 with batch variables like Reynold’s Number ranging from 20k to 1M value and specify the same range of AoA as you preferred for the NACA 0009 with an increment of 0.5o and observe if everything is fine with Cl vs. Cd graph? If not, then try changing the range of AoA and with an increment of 0.25o.
  • From the optimal airfoil that you have chosen for the earlier problem among AG25 and NACA 1410, perform analysis and attach the Cl vs. AoA and Cd vs. AoA graphs. What do you infer from those two graphs? Can you see any significant changes in the graph? What would you think to be the reason for it? After finding the reason, define an Analysis and select a suitable type among the four types, with transition criteria as 1 for both top and bottom surfaces and analyze it between the starting at 10k and ending at 100k with ∆=5,000 at fixed AoA. Attach Cl vs. Re graph, Cd vs. Re graph, and explain what you infer from these graphs? Can you find anything that significantly changes the Cl value from graphs?
  • Now try the same with different transition criteria; for example, at 1/3rd of top and bottom surfaces. What would you think about the behavior? Will it increase or decrease, and can you relate this to ‘golf ball with dimples on it’ ? Discuss it, and write what you inferred from the two graphs?

  • Mass, length, and other parameters of the design must be within the specified range.

  • Participants have the freedom to select the airfoil used for wings and rudder, span and area of the wings, etc.

  • The design should be stable and efficient and must have directional stability.

  • The design should have the specified value of static margin.

  • Participants must use only one type of software, XFLR5 (Foilsim III / AirShaper / Piano.Aero), for the purpose of simulation.

  • The decision of the event manager will be final.

 

JUDGING CRITERIA:

  • In the abstract round, the top 20 participants whose abstract models are complete and deemed good enough by the judges will be selected for the next round.

  • The simulation round winners are decided by the design’s parameters like static margin, the position of CoG chosen, directional stability, efficiency, CL/CD value, and how close are the parameter values to the actual value as prescribed in the problem statement.

  • In case of a tie, the time for submission will be considered to determine the winner, which means the participant who submitted first among the tied ones will be the winner.

Q - Who can participate in the event?

  • Any participant who is interested in aerodynamics and the analysis of aeroplanes can apply for this event.

Q - Do we need to have prior knowledge of aerodynamics?

  • Participants having prior knowledge of basic aerodynamics and aeroplanes will certainly have an edge over others. Knowing how the simulation software works will be an added bonus.

Q - How will the event be conducted?

  • It is an online event where participants will need to simulate the virtual aeroplane models. Participants can participate from any corner of the world.
